What Happened

You know what happened in Washington yesterday.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi's impeachment press conference dominated the evening news.  But what you may not know is what President Trump did yesterday.

In his speech before the United Nations General Assembly, Trump challenged the global elites and he made it clear that America will not be taken advantage of anymore.

With China's ambassador looking on, Trump reminded the world that 60,000 U.S. factories were lost because of unfair trade deals with China, and he warned that other nations are suffering in the same way.

Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, is in New York lying as usual and claiming the U.S. is the main terrorist force in world.  President Trump condemned the Iranian regime for its state-sponsorship of terrorism and its efforts to cause a second Holocaust through the annihilation of Israel.

Trump also declared that there is no universal right to abortion.  I don't recall any American president doing that before.

He told a room full of globalist bureaucrats that, "The future does not belong to globalists, it belongs to patriots."  He denounced open borders advocates for enabling human trafficking, and proudly declared that countries have a right to secure borders.

But listening to the evening news, you would think the only important events occurred in Washington.

Speaker AOC?

Congratulations are in order to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  It seems she is effectively the Speaker of the House now.

A few days ago, she tweeted that "the bigger national scandal" wasn't Trump, but her party's "refusal to impeach him."  When AOC tweets, Pelosi jumps.

Just to be clear about this:  Pelosi did not start formal impeachment proceedings.  To do that, the House of Representatives has to vote to begin that effort.  Instead, Pelosi called for an "official impeachment inquiry."  As the Wall Street Journal notes:

"Her chosen route avoids a full House floor vote on opening a probe, a step that has occurred each of the three previous times the House has launched impeachment proceedings against a president. Such a resolution would require 218 votes to pass."

Why didn't Pelosi call for a vote?  Maybe because the latest polls show that only 32% of the public supports impeachment.

What she did was buy into House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler's "impeachment investigation."  The press has said there was some disagreement between Pelosi and Nadler, but it appears that they are now on the same page.

Stay tuned, my friends.  We will keep you posted as the situation develops.

A Ukraine Primer

We've spent the last three years talking about Russia, Russia, Russia.  Why the sudden focus on Ukraine?

Well, the Russia hoax collapsed after Robert Mueller's testimony.  The left needed something else to hitch its impeachment bandwagon to.  So, the Deep State produced a leaked complaint claiming Trump had an inappropriate phone call with the president of Ukraine.

By the way, the intelligence community inspector general determined that the leaker had a political bias against the president.  The leaker is also being represented by lawyers connected to Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton.

But just like the left's efforts to invite Russian meddling in our elections, the left is using Ukraine to meddle in our elections.

  • Last May liberal senators wrote to Ukrainian leaders demanding they support the Mueller investigation of Donald Trump.
  • The DNC sent consultants to Ukraine to dig up dirt on Trump and Paul Manafort.
  • In 2016, the Obama Administration pressured Ukrainian officials to investigate Manafort and Roger Stone, who were associated with the Trump campaign.
  • Politico reported in January 2017 that Ukrainian officials were "scrambling" after their efforts to promote Hillary Clinton's campaign backfired after Trump's surprise victory.
  • And Ukrainian attempts to share information about those efforts have been repeatedly thwarted by liberal holdovers.

The Hill's John Solomon has done some of the best work connecting the dots and suggests that all of this may be leading to the source of the entire Deep State / Russia collusion conspiracy.

The Transcript

This morning, the White House released the transcript of Trump's 20-minute call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy.  In the call, Trump does raise concerns about the Ukrainian prosecutor who the former vice president demanded be fired, and Trump says that there has been "a lot of talk about Biden's son. . . It sounds horrible to me."

That's essentially the extent of it.  Two presidents commiserating about corruption and draining the swamps in their respective countries.  Is that illegal?  Not according to the Justice Department.

The New York Times reports that the director of national intelligence and the inspector general for the intelligence community "each referred the complaint for a possible criminal investigation into the president's actions. . .  The department's criminal division . . . concluded that there was no basis for a criminal investigation into Mr. Trump's behavior."

So the Justice Department says there's no crime, but congressional liberals are demanding impeachment.

In fact, there is so little here that Charlie Cook, founder of the non-partisan Cook Political Report, tweeted, "I was totally underwhelmed by the transcript."

But more to the point, is Trump supposed to ignore the alleged corruption by the former vice president and his son?

Article II of the Constitution charges the president with faithfully executing our laws.  President Trump would have been derelict in his duties to not say something about the corruption in Ukraine that allegedly involved the former vice president and his immediate family members.

If elements of the Ukrainian government were involved in corrupt activity and involved in Deep State efforts to bring Trump down in the Russian collusion investigation, the president would be derelict in his duties if he did not try to get to the bottom of it.

And don't forget this:  Not only was Hunter Biden getting $50,000 a month from a Ukrainian energy company, he also ran a hedge fund with John Kerry's stepson.

They went to China together -- on one of the former vice president's official trips -- and two weeks later the Chinese government invested $1.5 billion in Biden/Kerry hedge fund

And while we're releasing transcripts, let's see the transcripts of Obama's calls with Vladimir Putin.  He promised to show more "flexibility" after his re-election.  Let's see transcripts of Obama's calls to Hassan Rouhani.  Let's see his letters to the ayatollah.

Enough, Mitt!

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) seems intent on becoming the leader of the GOP NeverTrump establishment.  He told reporters that he found the transcript "troubling in the extreme."

Charlie Cook is "underwhelmed" but Sen. Romney is extremely troubled?

What I find "troubling in the extreme" is the left's growing support for infanticide, gun confiscation, free healthcare for illegal aliens and socialism.  What exactly is Sen. Romney doing about any of that?
