Clinton Cruises The consensus of the talking heads is that Hillary Clinton was the clear winner in last night's Democratic debate. But some focus groups and online polls suggested that Bernie Sanders held his own. Clearly, she did better last night than she has so far in the campaign. There were some sharp exchanges, but none of the other candidates managed to damage her. In one sense, Clinton prevailed because her opponents were so weak. |

Former Governors Martin O'Malley (MD) and Lincoln Chafee (RI), former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Virginia Senator Jim Webb and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders will be participating. |

Speaker Scramble House Republicans were scheduled to meet behind closed doors today to choose their nominee to replace John Boehner as speaker of the House. Daniel Webster of Florida and Jason Chaffetz of Utah had declared, as had House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Yesterday, former Vice President Dick Cheney and former Speaker Newt Gingrich endorsed McCarthy, who was widely expected to emerge as the caucus nominee. But just before today's meeting began, McCarthy suddenly dropped out of the race. As a result, the GOP caucus vote was called off. |

If Mr. Putin gets any weaker, he may end up controlling the entire Middle East! Multiple reports today indicate that Putin has deployed shock troops known as the Spetsnaz into Syria. These troops are "extremely aggressive and highly trained." |

Humiliation A few months ago, a Republican operative made an observation that caused something of a political flap when he said, "Every day Donald Trump is emasculating Jeb Bush." I recalled that observation this morning as I watched the latest filleting of Barack Obama, and by extension, America, by Vladimir Putin. During his presidency, Obama has regularly said to various segments of the U.S. electorate, "I have your back." If only we were led by a president who had the entire nation's back. |

"Get Out" The decline of America's influence under Obama is accelerating. Fox News reports that "Russian diplomats sent an official demarche [a diplomatic demand] ordering U.S. planes out of Syria." That demand was issued as Russia launched its first airstrikes in Syria following a unanimous vote by Russian lawmakers to approve President Vladimir Putin's request for the use of force. Putin is going to war, and he's telling America to get out of his way. How flexible will Obama be this time? |
