A Laughable Proposal

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner went to Capitol Hill yesterday to present President Obama’s plan for resolving the fiscal cliff. With just 31 days left until virtually every household in America is hit with massive tax increases, you would think Geithner would have a serious proposal to offer Republican leaders. He didn’t.

But don’t take my word for it. Here’s how Politico described it — “Geithner’s Fiscal Cliff Offer: Obama Wish List.” Here’s what the Washington Post wrote about Obama’s “fresh demands:”

Rice Bombs On The Hill

Susan Rice, the Obama Administration’s ambassador to the United Nations, is making the rounds on Capitol Hill this week. It is widely expected that President Obama will nominate Rice to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Part of Rice’s mission to Capitol Hill is to introduce herself to the men and women who will be voting on her confirmation. The other part is damage control.

Back On The Trail

The country is just 34 days away from the so-called “fiscal cliff.” If no agreement between President Obama and conservative House leaders is reached by January 1, 2013, the Bush tax cuts automatically expire. According to the liberal Brookings Institution, “Nearly 90 percent of all households would face tax increases averaging nearly $3,500.” Some are rightly calling it “Taxmageddon.”

To Give Thanks

Tomorrow the nation will pause as we spend time with friends and family in a day of thanksgiving for the tremendous blessings of this land. Some years, when things are going well and life glides along smoothly, celebrating is easy. But this year thanksgiving may be tough. Our country faces difficult times, economically and politically, and we are facing tremendous threats to our national security.

The Left’s War On Israel

The liberal media’s coverage of the conflict in Israel continues to be incredibly biased. It emphasizes civilian casualties in Gaza while seldom mentioning that the casualties are happening because Hamas and Islamic Jihad are exploiting media prejudices and Western sensibilities to make Israel look like the aggressor.

Petraeus Testifies

Former CIA Director General David Petraeus testified behind closed doors on Capitol Hill this morning about the 9/11 attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Gen. Petraeus told members of the intelligence committees that he “knew almost immediately” that the attack on the consulate was carried out by Ansar al Sharia, an Al Qaeda group in Libya.

Obama’s “Victory Lap”

President Barack Obama held his first press conference in months yesterday. Was news made? Did we learn anything new? Not really. This front page Washington Post headline says it all: “Meeting The Press, Taking A Victory Lap.”

The president’s comments yesterday were reminiscent of his “I won” quip to congressional conservatives four years ago. Once again, Obama claimed a mandate to raise taxes. Presumably, House conservatives also have a mandate not to raise taxes.

Debt IS A Moral Issue

The Associated Press reports this morning that the deficit for October, the first month of the new fiscal year, was $120 billion. That figure is 22% higher than the October 2011 deficit. And even though tax receipts were up 13% from October 2011, spending was up 16%. This level of spending is unsustainable.

Speaking about the debt and deficit yesterday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, “[Obama] does not believe that reducing deficits and debt are values unto themselves.”
