Capital Prayer Alert

As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a prayer alert about once a month. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshippers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. -- Gary

With Christmas less than two weeks away, it is easy to get caught up in the rush of preparations: cards for friends near and far, shopping for gifts for the special people in our lives, Christmas concerts, decorating, baking and wrapping to name a few. Each year we seem to be in search of the perfect Christmas -- a blend of the traditional and something unique.

This week here in Washington, we had some wintry weather that closed schools, contributed to lost power (us included) and generally put a break on Christmas preparations. I actually found myself thankful for the weather, which has sidetracked some of the things I thought were Christmas "must do's." It has made me focus on Christmas as it was meant to be --- a celebration of the the birth of the Christ child, the hope of the world come to us wrapped in humanity, born into a family chosen by God himself. In the form of a tiny child came the offer of forgiveness through the ultimate personal sacrifice for each and every one of us. The choice is ours to accept this most precious Christmas gift of all, one that never goes out of style, or needs to be exchanged or deteriorates over time. This gift is not for sale on Amazon, nor will its delivery be delayed by harsh weather.

As we are bombarded by ad campaigns for new cars, precious gems and super sales on everything imaginable, it is easy to forget that the tradition of gift-giving goes back to the Christ child -- the ultimate gift to a world in need- and the gifts of the wise men to the Christ child.

As the political year winds down and Congress prepares to go out of session until the New Year, it is a good time to reflect on two thoughts.

First, the most precious gift of the Savior is the gift of a God of All Comfort who gives us strength in this life by sharing in our trials. And, He walks beside us and savors our times of joy and celebration. He is unchanging no matter the political climate or challenges of the day. A well grounded faith will be tested but won't go out of style.

Second, we believers have been placed at a tipping point in the 21st century and have a responsibility to our country and culture. In addition to remaining true to our faith and deepening our relationship with the Almighty, we are called to act.

  • "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." -- Matthew 5:14-16

Savor the season, bask in the joy of the gift of the baby Jesus and reflect on the words of the Savior during his ministry on earth. May God bless you as you commit to a renewed dedication to the Biblical values we share.

May you have a blessed Christmas!
