IRS Scandal Takes Stunning Turn

Late yesterday afternoon, just after one House committee voted to demand a criminal investigation of former IRS official Lois Lerner, another House committee dropped a bombshell.

Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released a letter, signed by five subcommittee chairmen, to the committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD). Issa essentially accused Cummings of making false statements and attempting to obstruct the investigation.

"Poof" Goes The Peace Process

Secretary of State John Kerry likes spending time on his yacht. For the sake of America's relationship with Israel, I hope Kerry strongly considers taking an extended vacation, perhaps a cruise to some remote Pacific island. The longer he stays on the job, the more damage he does.

While testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday, Kerry laid the blame for the breakdown of the so-called "peace process" squarely at Israel's feet. The issue: Homes for Jews in Jerusalem.

Pay Gap Hypocrisy

Today President Obama will sign two executive orders intended to spotlight the pay gap between men and women. (Obama's orders will be limited in their effect and apply only to federal contractors.)

Meanwhile in the Senate, debate is expected to begin this week on the Paycheck Fairness Act, which the New York Times reports "would add new regulations on how private companies pay their employees."

Pray For The Persecuted Church

Friday, my wife, Carol, asked readers of her Capital Prayer Alert to pray for Christians and Jews facing persecution overseas. Recent headlines only reinforce the urgency for men and women of faith to pray without ceasing.

There are reports from Syria that Father Frans van der Lugt, a 75 year-old Catholic priest, was assassinated today by militant Islamists in the city of Homs. Father van der Lugt lived in Syria for decades. He spoke fluent Arabic and was well-regarded for his humanitarian work.

Keep Terrorists Out!

Accommodating the Islamic Republic of Iran has been a top priority for Barack Obama from the day he first stepped foot in the Oval Office. Obama's outreach began just weeks after his first inauguration. The Iranians didn't take him seriously then, and they don't take him seriously now.

Just look at the man they are trying to send to America as Iran's new ambassador to the United Nations -- Hamid Abutalebi.

Tragedy At Fort Hood

Yesterday America witnessed another terrible tragedy at Fort Hood. Ivan Lopez killed three people and wounded 16 others before taking his own life. Base commander Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley says the investigation is ongoing and he isn't ruling anything out. But you wouldn't know that from our politically correct media, which rushed to judgment -- quickly announcing that there was no evidence of terrorism.

Obama's Victory Speech

Yesterday President Obama strutted into the Rose Garden and gave a victory speech celebrating Obamacare. His rhetoric was so over-the-top, for a moment I thought he might actually do a victory dance.

The president claimed: "7.1 million Americans have now signed up for private insurance plans through these marketplaces -- 7.1." That is an intentionally misleading statement.

Jihad In America

FBI agents, military police and local authorities in the Kansas City, Missouri, area are desperately trying to prevent a mass murder. They are searching for Muhammad Abdullah Hassan, who signed up to join the Army in February. Hassan was kicked out last week when authorities discovered his plans to wage a "Fort Hood-inspired jihad" against U.S. soldiers.

Whom To Believe?

Last week, after President Obama met with Pope Francis, a controversy briefly erupted about what was or was not discussed between the two. Initial reports from the White House suggested Obama and Francis talked about income inequality and world peace, two issues Francis has emphasized.

Obama And The King

After meeting with Pope Francis yesterday, President Obama is headed to Saudi Arabia today to meet with King Abdullah. Just as Obama's NATO meetings this week were meant to reassure nervous allies, today's meeting is meant to repair strained relations with the Saudis.

The Saudis have been very public in their displeasure with Obama's foreign policy, particularly his outreach toward Shiite Iran. One Middle East expert suggested that Riyadh's patience is wearing thin.
